Appointments & Referrals
Appointments
The best way to make an appointment, message your provider or the pharmacy, and retrieve/visit results is through the MHS GENESIS Patient Portal. See our information page to learn more about the MHS GENESIS Patient Portal. The MHS GENESIS Patient Portal is accessible with a CAC or DS Logon.
Referrals
TRICARE Prime Enrollees
If enrolled in TRICARE Prime, you need a referral to get specialty care. Work with your PCM through secure messaging on the MHS GENESIS Patient Portal or an appointment to get your referral placed. Our TRICARE partner, Humana Military, will provide authorization information through their beneficiary self-service portal. See the linked pages for more information about referrals on the TRICARE website, or how to get non-PCM care in the East Region.
Referrals to specialty care in the clinic will be booked by the Referral Management Team; you will be called to confirm date and time. Network referrals outside of the clinic, once approved by TRICARE, will need to be booked by calling the approved facility, which can be found through the beneficiary self-service portal or from a letter with the approval that will be sent to you in the mail.
TRICARE Select Enrollees
If you're enrolled in TRICARE Select, you don't need a referral for specialty care, but costs for care at network providers are lower. Network and non-network providers across the continental U.S. and overseas can be found through the TRICARE Provider Directories or through TRICARE’s Find a Doctor Wizard.
Getting Care
When it comes to getting care, you have several options.
- AFMAN 41-210 gives commanders and supervisors authority to grant active duty Air Force personnel up to 24 hours of “sick status” if the illness/injury doesn’t require intervention by the military treatment facility. If the medical issue persists longer than 24 hours, the member must be referred for treatment.
- Use the MHS GENESIS Patient Portal. Book appointments with your PCM team, send messages straight to them regarding duty-limiting conditions, referral requests, prescription renewals, etc. You can also message the pharmacy and activate a new prescription for later pickup. With the portal, you have all the same access as our appointment line when it comes to booking primary care appointments and messaging providers.
- Call the 6th MDG Appointment Line at 813-827-2273, Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Follow our Facebook page for scheduled and unscheduled closures.
- Call the Military Health System Nurse Advice Line at 877-363-1303. This option is available 24/7/365 and connects you to a nurse who can provide home care advice, recommend a higher level of care, or refer an Urgent Care Clinic (active duty service members require a referral/pre-authorization for urgent care). They can also provide you with a sick slip.
